Once you are in the valley, the water cascade at Chaparai, Padmapuram Gardens, the Tribal Museum and the coffee slopes make an easy full day, and Borra Caves fits neatly onto the way out.

Local tip — Bring a jacket whatever the month. Araku is high enough that mornings and evenings turn cold quickly, and in winter the mist can sit in the valley until mid-morning. If the coffee slopes are the reason you came, go out early, when the light is low and the hills are still wet. The ghat road down to Vizag is a long series of bends, so plan the descent for daylight and let the driver set the pace instead of pushing to catch a train or a flight. In monsoon the surface gets slippery and the waterfalls run hard: Chaparai and the Katiki falls near Borra are at their best then, but the walking is muddy. Borra Caves are cool and damp inside with uneven steps, so proper shoes help. Weekends and holidays fill the valley's few roads quickly, and a weekday visit is a quieter place altogether. Mobile signal thins out once you leave the main road, so agree the day's plan with your driver before you set off.

That is one of the most common ways people do this trip, and it is the best of both. You get the rail journey through the tunnels on the way up and a private car for the descent, with stops at the viewpoints and Borra Caves. How do we fit Borra Caves into the trip?
The caves sit on the road between Araku and Vizag, so they slot naturally into whichever leg you are driving. Inside it is cool, damp and uneven underfoot, so wear proper shoes. In monsoon the Katiki falls nearby are worth the short walk from the same stop.
When is the best time to visit Araku Valley?
November to February is the clearest and coolest, with mist in the mornings and long views from the ghat road. Monsoon is beautiful in a different way, with the waterfalls running hard, but the bends get slippery and the walking gets muddy. Even in summer the valley stays milder than the coast.
Where in the valley can you pick us up?
